ISE is thrilled to announce the arrival of Chiwoo Park, who will be joining our department from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, a joint college of the Florida A&M University and Florida State University. Park brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to our department, particularly at the intersection of AI, statistics, and engineering focusing on advanced manufacturing.

Park engages with machine learning and its applications in smart manufacturing and physical science. He uses surrogate modeling and experimental design to create digital twins for cyber-physical systems and develop autonomous systems for AI-driven scientific discovery platforms.

He is currently applying methodological research to develop system-level digital twins of complex systems with many components, such as smart manufacturing systems, advanced material and semiconductor manufacturing systems. He also explores processing-structure-property in materials imaging through modeling and analysis of object data.

Park received his B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Seoul National University in 2001 and his Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University in 2011. He joined the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Florida State University in 2011 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2017 and to a full professor in 2023.

"We are so excited about Chiwoo's joining us in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department," said Cynthia Chen, the department chair. "With his arrival, we anticipate having a significant footprint and breaking new grounds in the University's initiatives in AI and Machine Learning and their intersection with advanced manufacturing. Given that ISE is all about systems, I also anticipate us playing a leading role in uniting the College of Engineering’s and the UW's vast expertise in these areas as well as physical and cyber systems."

Park expressed his enthusiasm for joining the University of Washington, stating, "I am honored to be joining such a prestigious institution and look forward to collaborating with my new colleagues and experts in the surrounding tech ecosystem."
