Program overview

This certificate program will provide the technical expertise and problem-solving capabilities to develop systems engineering skills and knowledge. Those with this certificate will be able to apply lifecycle modeling and analysis skills to the development of complex and agile technical systems. In other words, the certificate will provide the students an in-depth knowledge in system requirements development and analysis, functional modeling, and architectural development for any cyber-physical environment and its socio-technical interface. They will also gain expertise in systems engineering-driven planning that include project management, risk assessment, and financial modeling, which are typically not covered in other engineering certificate programs. Therefore, the students will acquire the credentials to help them meet the technical challenges and have the leadership skills for project requirements, budget, and operations.

Learning outcomes

  • Formulate and follow the systems engineering design process, including models for systems analysis and decision making, requirements analysis, and functional analysis.
  • Employ project management considerations throughout the project life cycle.
  • Apply risk management to different types of systems, across system life cycles, and scalability to the size and scope of a project.
  • Demonstrate understanding of risk management methods & techniques, and the sources of risk, based on the type of system, its lifecycle, and in context of the overall systems engineering process.
  • Describe the key elements of the system architecting process.
  • Formulate the roles of systems architects and their relationship to systems engineering.
  • Derive, validate, and apply requirements for a system.
  • Apply a modeling tool and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methods to the architecting process, including simulation.
  • Handle supply chain management challenges, including definition and scope, logistics, inventory and risks.
  • Engage in cross-cultural communication, international team building and outsourcing.
  • Apply knowledge of modern and emerging topics in supply and demand analytics.
  • Conduct design studies to examine the performance of engineered systems from the perspective(s) of the human operator(s) and user(s).
