ISE launches new mentorship programISE has launched its first ever mentorship program. The program is a collaborative effort between the ISE department, the ISE Executive Advisory Board, and the UW and Puget Sound chapters of the Institute of Industrial & System Engineers. Thirteen ISE seniors have been paired with industry mentors, who will guide them in the key transition from college to the working world.

Ji-Eun Kim joins ISE faculty
The ISE Department welcomes its newest faculty member, Ji-Eun Kim! Assistant professor Kim joins us this fall from the Pennsylvania State University, where she completed her Ph.D. in industrial engineering. Kim’s research focuses on human factors, a specialization that is rooted in her previous study of cognitive neuroscience.

I owe a debt of gratitude to UW’s immigrant janitorsMichiyas Assefa, a recent graduate of the BSIE program, penned an editorial for the Seattle Times in which he paid thanks to the janitorial staff at the University of Washington. Assefa is part of the Seattle Habesha community, composed of Eritrean and Ethiopian immigrants. Among the janitorial staff at UW are Habesha mothers and fathers who moved here to seek a better life for their children and who take pride in the success of the new generation to which Assefa belongs.

Aiming for the STARS: First STARS students graduate with engineering degreesThe STARS program is designed to increase the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds who graduate with engineering degrees. STARS students participate in a “redshirt” year their first year and typically spend five years at the UW; however, three students from the first cohort, including ISE's Courtney Seto, have completed the program and their engineering degrees in just four years.

Seattle to Portland in 15 minutes? Pacific Hyperloop begins campaign to make it soGISE alumnus Ahmed ElAyouti is cofounder of Pacific Hyperloop, a competitor in the Hyperloop One Global Challenge. The Hyperloop system, conceptualized by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, uses a series of low-pressure tubes to transport levitated pods in an attempt to revolutionize transportation. Pacific Hyperloop’s goal is to reduce the travel time from Seattle to Portland to just 15 minutes by achieving near-supersonic speeds. Pacific Hyperloop is among the semifinalists that will present at the Global Challenge showcase in Washington, D.C. on April 5th.

Up against thirty other teams, the team took first place, and the $2,500 prize, at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers FlexSim Software Student Simulation Competition.
