The GRE is not required for admission and is entirely optional. If you choose to submit GRE scores, they will be considered as part of the holistic review of your application.
Our PhD program follows a direct-admit model. All admitted PhD students receive full funding support.
Publications are not required for admission. However, because our program is highly competitive, research experience and evidence of scholarly potential can strengthen an application.
No. Applicants are not expected to secure a faculty advisor before applying. Faculty matching occurs during the admissions review process. Faculty members may reach out directly to applicants whose research interests align with their own.
International applicants may be able to satisfy the English proficiency requirement if their previous degree was completed in English and meets the Graduate School's criteria. Yes. Applicants may apply directly to the PhD program with a bachelor's degree.
Yes. Unofficial transcripts may be used for the application review process. Official transcripts will be required if an offer of admission is made. The Graduate School will let you know if any action from you will be required.

There is no formal interview process. However, faculty members may contact applicants they are considering for admission to arrange an informal conversation.
A WES evaluation is not required during the application stage. If you are admitted, the UW Graduate School will determine whether any additional credential evaluation is needed during the admissions process.
The application fee is approximately $100. At this time, our department does not offer application fee waivers.
